I was looking for an outfitter for my first trip to South Africa and Louis van Bergen & Spiral Horn Safaris was recommended to me by a friend. So a quick look at his website and I dropped Louis an email asking for info and help on my hunt which also included two of my customers. Wow Louis was fast to respond and he worked very hard to answer all my first time questions plus offer great suggestions from everything from what travel company for flight reservations to use and what was the best connections for the flights to the hard part which was picking out the species we wanted to target. Even down to what bullets would work the best for my hunt as I am an avid reloader as well. Day or night I would send Louis an email or Skype request and we go over the options and fine tune the plan.

So in just a matter of days Louis had put together a package which included private charter flights to the Kalahari were we planned on hunting lions and other plains game then another flight to his ranch in Limpopo Province, SA were Cape Buffalo and plains game would be targeted. I have traveled extensively to hunt North America and New Zealand and never have I had such a one stop shop for planning.

Even after we booked the hunt Louis checked with us while we waited for the 4 months to pass to head to SA on a weekly basis fine tuning the details of our stay. So after a flight from US to SA Louis was waiting to assist with clearing our firearms and had us loaded up and headed to our accommodations for the night in short order. From that point on Louis and his entire employee’s took care of our needs and we had a great hunt. The lion was a special moment for me and to have Louis as the PH made it even better. The food, lodgings & attention to detail was just the best I had seen in my 30 years of big game hunting. The animals we took all were outstanding trophies, which included 3 Male lions, 2 Cape Buffalo over 40 inches, Roan, Sable, Giraffe, Waterbuck, Nyala, Gemsbuck & Eland to name just a few.

The taxidermy work has been painless as well because when Louis says it is a family business he means it, Pieter van Bergen ( brother ) owns African Memories Taxidermy so Louis has all the bases covered.

We are already planning our 2013 hunt which will include Elephant and Cape Buffalo, cannot wait to go back.

In closing I would strongly recommend talking with Louis if you want a hunt of a lifetime in South Africa or other African Countries. I got two for one, a hunt of a lifetime and a great friend in Louis van Bergen

I just got back from my hunt with Spiral Horn Safaris and couldn't be happier. Hunting with them is like hunting with your friends except these friends guide you to the best game, track, skin, cook and clean and even open your beer for you. You spend each evening around the fire after a gourmet meal and discus any topic that comes up. They even make sure you have a good last meal and are checked into the airport easily. I can't say enough about their hospitality and care they showed me. I'll be planning my next trip over soon.

There are few times in life when your experiences mirror your expectations. This hunt with Louis and his team met and surpassed all my expectations! The experience was everything I hoped. From the charter flight in on their own plane to the last day out Louis was attentive to my needs and wishes.
